Professional Development Week Reflection
The Professional Development Week (PDW) is prepared by Taylor's to help us to learn about industry working life through the various workshops. The workshops that I've attended were :
- "Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduates" by Maybank
- "The Power of I.P. (intellectual Property) Monetization" by Stive Asia
- "Best Practices in Personal Branding Strategy via LinkedIn" by PwC
- "Storyteller: Lessons from the Father of Malaysian Animation Industry" by Filmic Entertainment
- "Life of a Producer in the Video Production Industry" by Lokalab
- "Post-Pandemic: Growth of Travel and Tourism Industry" by Agoda
The first workshop I attend is Maybank workshop, it was a highly informative and creative sharing. Debt and investments were the main discussion of topics covered during the workshop. Before I attend this workshop, I have a little knowledge on stock and investment. I am interested to listen about it because I know this can help me a lot in my future investment knowledge and skills. Attending the workshop was helpful because it provided ideas on how someone with less financial literacy like myself may comprehend the stock market by conducting appropriate, targeted study rather than entering the market blindly with less knowledge. My favorite part of our speaker's speech was when he discussed the need of first understanding our investing habits. Many people including me, always think that investment is simple and have no any plans for it. I should humbly learn from others that have planning and deep understanding before get into the investment and accept the risk. Moreover, I also think that this is a very important workshop for every person to learn about financial knowledge so that we are able to face any emergency.
Furthermore, I really enjoyed the workshop of "Life of a Producer in the Video Production Industry" by Lokalab. I am interested because I have involved in some video production during my internship. Besides, I've also introduced by a friend to have a chance to get involve in some video production team. From there, I have gain basic knowledge and skills to learn how to produce a video with good quality. My experience is very little but at least I still learn things that I didn't know before like video planning before shooting, back up plans, how to come out with the best with minimum budget and etc. I really appreciate the viewpoints from the during the workshop as it was really were excellent. There are a lot of key take away that I can learn about. The workshop has shared about although watching short video like TikTok is very trendy now but, the traditional video also has to be acknowledged. In a nutshell, learning what experts have to say about the current excitement over short videos is useful for developing an idea of how the market for them can develop. In my opinion, just because a short video isn't as elaborate as a traditional shot doesn't mean it's somehow less important. We should focus on the content and the message they wanted to deliver and also the moral value behind it.
I have a LinkedIn account but I don't often update it, the PwC workshop on personal branding was also a fruitful discussion. During the talk, we got to learn about the functions of LinkedIn and most importantly, we also learn about on how to create a professional presence there. Moreover, the workshop also taught us how to develop our personal branding outside of LinkedIn, so it wasn't the only topic we concentrated on. We now have great insights into how the market perceives and evaluates us as a result of our many portfolio accounts. Although I had already created a portfolio for my internship, I believe this session gave me additional insight into alternative ways to contact professionals in the industry. After this workshop, I have a better understanding and idea of how to set up my accounts and portfolio before entering the industry.
In conclusion, all of the workshops have been really enlightening, interesting, and thought-provoking. I've gained a lot of knowledge that are definitely helpful in my future even though some of it are not graphic design-related. am truly appreciative that I have the opportunity to participate in these workshops as part of my study.
