Three grid options :

After receiving feedback, I would like to change my grid into :

Type specimen sheet :

After everything has been finalized, we can start off from half title until the first chapter and then show it to Mr Vinod to make sure we are all on the right track and didn't make any fundamental mistakes.

First attempt :

However, Mr Vinod said the book must be 32 pages excluded the book cover. So I have to add more visuals and play around with the layout.

09/06/2021 | Week 11
General feedback :
Task 3(A) : As for your e portfolio for TASK 3(A), please look at what Jing Wen's. The task is called Task 3(A). you need to ensure your book has 32 pages (not including cover). You need to make sure that there is an outline around your page (JPEG).

Specific feedback :
Task 3(B) : Option two is good. Layout is great. Later watch the recorded session to hear my feedback to some of the students. It will applicable to you with regard to the navigation : strong typo identity and colour identity in the brand guide. I can see you have learned a lot from your Book Design experience.

REFLECTION
Experience :
This is my first time designing a book and I thought it will be fun. But, when comes to designing the layout, there are a lot of things should be considered such as the placement of the illustration can be place at different position to lead the viewer's eye to the paragraph, the length of each paragraph also should be considered because some are long and some are short and I need to try different layouts and illustration to make them look nice and introduce more surprise in each spreads.

Observation :
At the very beginning, perhaps because I am not familiar with book layout or having not enough references , I found myself a bit challenging to come out with good layout. There are a lot of white space and some visuals can be place at better position. I should do more study and look more people's work to come out with more creative ideas of layout. After several attempts, I finally can create different layout at least correctly. After that, I try to play around with the visuals and color, trying to make it looks interesting in each spreads. At the end, the book looks good and I am happy with it especially on page 9-12.

Finding :
I am glad that I've learned a lot of publishing design even I've struggle a lot in some stages but its worth. After put everything together and put it in the ebook, it looks good and I am very happy that I can create a book with my own drawing. After I've got this experience of creating a book, I believe that this will be very helpful for my future if  I'm going to design a book or print a book.

FURTHER READING

This book discover form and space, color fundamental, choosing and using type, the world of image and putting it all together. Negative space is magical, don't just fill it up. Negative space(white space) is  just as much shape that you have to deal with in a composition as positive shapes, whether pictures or type. When you don't deal with it, white space feels dead and disconnect from the visual material it surrounds.

Treat the type as image. Type is visual material made up of line of lines and dots and shapes and textures that needs to relate compositionally to everything else included in the design, no matter how different they seems to be. Typography can be expressive, can be manipulated for inventive interconnection of structural elements within language and can be resonate with its subcultural audience and reference this or that pop-cultural zeitgeist. It must still transmit information.
